At the mouth of Boka Bay and the foot of Mount Orjen, Herceg Novi is one of the most cosmopolitan resorts in southern Montenegro, whose turbulent past has created a blend of picturesque architectural styles and a rich cultural heritage. Founded in 1382 by a Bosnian king Tvrtko I, the town was later ruled by the Ottomans, Venetians, Spaniards, French, Austro-Hungarians and Russians. Today its fortresses are used as open air stages for the town's many festivals, film screenings, concerts and theatre productions. Because of its stunning views of the bay, sunny Mediterranean climate and its lush subtropical gardens, it is often called 'the town of sun, sea and flowers'.

Herceg-Novi enjoys approximately 200 sunny days a year, and a 6 month long swiming season. It has many small beaches along the sea-front promenade and others, accessible by boat, on the wild Lustica peninsula. Along the promenade and in the old town there are many venues convenient for tango dancing; either inside or out on the terraces, great for dancing underneath the stars.
